Fallout 4 tweaks

by chazu

These are some tweaks for Fallout 4 for smoother gameplay. Collected from various online guides, some slightly fixed.

Tweaks

Fixing mouse delay/lag

  • Go to ...\My Games\Fallout4, open Fallout4Prefs.ini
  • Change iPresentInterval=1 to 0
  • Change bForceIgnoreSmoothness=0 to 1
  • Open Fallout4.ini and change iPresentInterval there too

If you use Nvidia gpu do the following:

  • Right-click Nvidia tray icon
  • Go to settings
  • Go to 3d settings and add Fallout4.exe
  • Change Triple Buffering on
  • Change Maximum pre-rendered frames (or something like that) to 1
  • Change V-Sync on
Not sure how these settings exactly affect the lag, but after doing the above steps (on nvidia gpu) the mouse lag was significantly decreased.

Removing mouse smoothing

  • Go to ...\My Games\Fallout4, open Fallout4.ini
  • Under [Controls] add bMouseAcceleration=0
  • Next, go to your game folder, open folder Fallout4
  • Open Fallout4Prefs.ini, add the same under [Controls]
NOTE: This removes the acceleration only from 'within' the game, not menus
NOTE: The original guide told to add the second entry into a 'Fallout4.ini' found in the second Fallout4 folder, but I have only 'Fallout4Prefs.ini' there.

Changing the FOV

  • Go to ...\My Games\Fallout4, open Fallout4.ini
  • Under [Display], put fDefaultWorldFOV=XX and fDefault1stPersonFOV=YY
  • Change XX and YY to your preferred fov angle (90 is good)
  • Next open Fallout4Prefs.ini in the folder
  • Add the same under [Display]
  • Go to your main game folder and open folder 'Fallout4'
  • Open Fallout4Prefs.ini found there and add the same as above
  • Next, open the game, load save and open pipboy
  • Open console
  • Type fov 90 (or experiment, I use 78 for a big inventory screen)
  • When done, type refreshini into the console, exit console and save
If Pipboy altering mods get messy, consider trying reverting the player model FOV back to default. Haven't had any problems with the above Pipboy inventory mods.

Skipping intro videos

  • Go to ...\My Games\Fallout4, open Fallout4.ini
  • Under [General] add the following lines:
  • SIntroSequence=0
  • fChancesToPlayAlternateIntro=0
  • uMainMenuDelayBeforeAllowSkip=0

Removing Depth of Field

  • Go to ...\My Games\Fallout4, open Fallout4Prefs.ini
  • Under [Imagespace], change bDoDepthOfField=1 and bScreenSpaceBokeh=1 both to 0

Remove movement acceleration / movement damping

2022-12-03 https://www.reddit.com/r/fo4/comments/vbrmuu/removing_movement_acceleration/ Removes the sluggish movement. Paste following into Fallout4.ini :
    [Controls] bDampenFirstPlayerControls=0 bDampenThirdPlayerControls=0
